10 days on Loch Lomond - Part Two

So once we were set up, we were free to relax. Here's a diary of some of the things we did....

Braving the Loch
Tuesday 23 We walked into Luss to have a look round. Luss is a pretty, well kept Lochside village, areas of which are being restored and famous for being used as the outdoor setting for the Scottish soap "Take the High Road".....queue the music! Lauren and Tony took to the Loch for paddling and fishing, braver than me - it was freezing.

Film Night
Camping Dinner
Cow on the road!
Wednesday 24 We decided to have a driving explore today, over the top of the nearby Glen Douglas, we were glad of the car and we got some serious rain throughout the day. Glen Douglas winds up and down mountain, through MOD land and farmland filled with Highland cattle who wander at will, mostly slowly down the middle of the road! Once we got back, it was time for camping tea and camping film night - Harry Potter on the pc. For dinner we had chicken pasta in a tomato sauce, served on enamel plates.

Nearly at the top

A bit laden!
Thursday 25 Today we ticked off one of the big things we wanted to do. Take a boat ride out to Inchcailloch Island. We took a boat from Luss across to the island, passing some of the other many islands on the Loch and hopping off before the boat carried on to Balmaha. The island was beautiful, unfortunately we didn't get to spot an Osprey from the top, but amazingly just as we sat there taking in the view and I thought to myself the only thing that could make this better is if a jet plane streaked past below us (sad I know!), a tornado buzzed behind us..not perfect but pretty spooky! We followed the trail around the island spotting the hundreds of Dor Beetles (which I've just googled and is actually a dung beetle!), visiting the burial site and reading about the drunken funerals that took place in the 1600's. We picnicked by the little beach and as the island has no running water we braved the compost toilets (no compost and no lights!) before heading back to the jetty for our boat back. I wasn't ready to finish the day, so I convinced Tony to drive us round to Balmaha. it turned out that despite the fact that lots of boats go there each day there's not much there, but a little stroll set us off on the West Highland Way,  past Conic Hill, we spotted a deer at last and then found a nice stony beach where Lauren could practice her stone throwing. Walking back to the car we found the Oak Tree Inn and stopped for dinner, I know we enjoyed it, but it must be may age I can't remember what we had!

to be continued.......

  1. Such a beautiful a country. We have friends and relatives who travel the world and come back withphotos of scenery like this.So many people have never set foot in Scotland,we forget it is all on our own doorstep. The silver beaches in the far nothwest are magnificent. Hope to make a visit in the spring.
