Big Sandwiches and the Bifter (Big Breakfast) at Waddington Air Show and Oakhill Leisure Camp Site

So you may think that I have just been lazing around all weekend, not bothering to blog, but actually it was Waddington weekend, so in the Hill household it has been a weekend of high excitement and activity. It is now an annual event that we travel with the Attwoods to Oakhill Leisure Campsite near Norton Disney in Lincs, foregoing our usual luxury of electricity to camp in their non electric field which is a lovely grassy area surrounded by trees and hedges with the occasional view out over the Lincolnshire countryside towards Waddington. The facilities are limited but spotless and the site is run by the very efficient Mary in her golf cart and Ron who make sure everything is tip top. There is a small but entertaining play area in the electric field which is mostly used by caravans and camper vans but tents can use. There is also a fishing lake, that you can use at an extra cost. Unfortunately our camera battery ran out at the Airshow,so I didn't get a chance to take a photo but here's one from last year - as we went at the same time, to the same place, with the same people then you'll never know the difference!

As for food, we generally don't get room to take much and buy when we get to the site, but we knew we wouldn't have time on this trip. So Friday night we had pasta in tomato sauce, a freshly roasted Ocado chicken from home and Chris' wonderful home made loaf, which we all washed down with liberal amounts of bottled beer and home made wine. It was bed by midnight as we had an early start the next morning, obviously allowing about an hour to apply all the thermal gear needed to survive a Julys nights camping!
Breakfast the next morning was more home made bread, toasted with butter and apricot jam, then we packed up a picnic bag a la Famous Five and headed off for the Air Show.
It was an amazing day, we saw the USAF Thunderbirds for the first time, the lady doing the commentary was amazing (I have perfected a wicked impression - but I guess you had to be there), they were surrounded by a lot of blather and a terrible soundtrack but nothing could detract from their amazing flying and the sound of 4 F16s taking off at once was the loudest most exciting and frightening thing I've ever heard in 35 years of Air Shows. Of course the Vulcan XH558 was the star of the show, her wonderful growl and amazing new display cannot be beaten and so many people love her it's a true honour to be there when she flies. I took Lauren in the Vulcan costume I made for her for World Book day last year (Vulcan Ventures being the book, available from the Vulcan to the Skies website). The ladies in the Vulcan Village seemed quite taken with it and then we got caught up with Paul a photographer for The Sun who seemed to think Lauren would fit quite well into their feature on the Vulcan this week, time will tell if she makes it, but here's what she would look like if she did appear!

Anyway, I'm sure you're dying to know what we ate for our picnic..well if truth be told mostly rammel (a sluts lunch Tammy!!) - Marks & Spencer rammel, but rammel non the less, Tony though decided to make us a round of cobs that were delicious but took some chewing and getting them down probably explains why we ran out of water before the day was up! A cheese topped roll, butter, gammon ham (Morrisons counter), Lidl mature cheddar and good old Branston pickle...

The day was red hot and I was not the only one to miss a bit with the sun cream and suffer the consequences, we saw several people who had gone beyond red into a sickening purple colour...terrible!

The display over we made our weary way back to the camp site for tea, traditionally a barbecue, served with salad and boiled new potatoes. Jean did a good job of finishing off the pea pod burgundy - well apple chardonnay actually, while the rest of us stuck with beer until the cold and tiredness overtook us.

Sunday brought about scorching temperatures which turfed us out of bed for 8am. The plan was to indulge in a Bifter and then a slow pack up. For the uninitiated of you, the Bifter consists of excellent quality thick cut bacon, good but not too good chipolata sausages, thick slices of fried field mushrooms, eggs fried in the bacon pan and bread and butter...we also had fried cherry tomatoes, we could have added beans but we didn't, accompanied by camping tea (or coffee if you're me!). We had to move the table across the field to find shade enough to make eating comfortable which may have looked a bit bizarre to the other campers but we have no shame!

We spent the rest of the day packing up the tent, in between watching day 2 of the Air Show across the fields and after ramming everything in the car with a shoe horn and slotting ourselves in we headed home already thinking about booking for next year!
